POSTURAL POWER arises from aligning ourselves with gravity. As martial artists, our goal is to harness this force rather than oppose it. Maintaining an elongated, upright posture minimizes the area affected by gravity, allowing us to channel its energy more efficiently when applying techniques. Many practitioners struggle with this concept. Years of office work and phone use often cause the head to tilt forward, disrupting spinal alignment. In training, following the hands too tensely with the eyes can pull the head further ahead of the body. I often remind students to think with their brains, not their heads – a centered head position enhances grounding, balance and precision. If gravity never tires, why fight it?
